Different Types of Above-Ground Pools

Very practical and faster to install than an in-ground pool, the above-ground pool comes in various forms and categories. Check out our article to help you choose the right above-ground pool.

First, there are removable above-ground pools. This category includes:

  •       The inflatable above-ground pool: available in different shapes (round, oval, rectangular, etc.), this type of pool is economical, easy to install, and easy to handle. However, it is quite fragile. So, avoid hitting the structure or leaning on the edges.
  •       The self-supporting above-ground pool: also known as a freestanding or self-stable pool, it is similar to an inflatable pool. It must be installed on a flat surface.

Before continuing, for your relaxation moments in the pool, don't hesitate to get some pool floats for the whole family.

Apart from removable above-ground pools, there are also kit pools with rigid structures. The two main types of kit pools are:

  •       The tubular above-ground pool: similar to a self-supporting pool, it has a basin made of a PVC liner and a frame of steel tubes that support the basin. It usually comes in round or rectangular shapes.
  •       The rigid above-ground pool: made of modular panels (steel, resin, aluminum, wood, composite wood, etc.), it features the aesthetic dimension of a steel pool. Given that it offers a greater variety in terms of dimensions and shapes, it can be buried.

Different Coverings to Place Under an Above-Ground Pool

No matter which type of above-ground pool you plan to install, it is essential to choose the appropriate covering. You can also refer to our complementary article on what to place under a tubular pool, as well as our article on above-ground pool decks.

Here are the different options available to you.

Geotextile

Ideal for small-sized pools, inflatable pools, intex tubular pools, and self-supporting pools, geotextile is a covering placed on grass. It prevents the growth of plants that could tear the liner. Similar to a carpet, geotextile offers great swimming comfort when laid correctly.

The Sand Bed

There will be an explanatory video in this chapter.

It's also possible to install an above-ground pool on a sand bed to increase stability and mask imperfections in your terrain. Although this option is easy to implement and inexpensive, it requires extensive preparation. To prevent the sand from scattering, you need to dig a hole about 10 cm deep. Then, clear the soil and remove any potential obstructions (stones, roots, plant debris, etc.).

Once the space is well prepared, spread sand inside it. You have the option to mix the sand with cement to increase the support's resistance. Finally, cover the pool floor with a geotextile to slow the growth of weeds.

The Grass

Placing the above-ground pool on the lawn is the simplest and most inexpensive solution. However, it has some drawbacks. In reality, your grass will be deprived of light for several months, resulting in its disappearance. You'll then need to grow a new lawn.

If you choose this solution, you'll need to mow the lawn and clear the area of anything that could damage the above-ground pool. Before placing the pool on the grass, it's advisable to lay a durable ground mat.

The Concrete Slab

This option is the most stable and flat for installing an above-ground pool. However, it is the most expensive and the most complex to implement. Also known as a pool base, the concrete slab is suitable for all types of above-ground pools.

For its implementation, you'll need to determine the necessary space. Then excavate the soil and place a layer of approximately 10 cm of gravel and 5 cm of sand. Ensure the surface is even and prepare the formwork using wooden boards. After preparing the concrete, pour it into the formwork. Once the concrete slab is ready, place a ground mat or protective tarp before installing the above-ground pool on it.

As you have seen, there are numerous solutions for placing an above-ground pool. We hope you have found the one that suits you best after reading this article.
